ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Della Walker Sr was born on Ulgundahi Island.
She moved to Bundjalung country, between Tabulam and Yamba in north-eastern New South Wales, when she married William Walker of the Bundjalung tribe. Della spoke three Aboriginal languages, Yaygirr, Bundjalung and Gumbainggir, and she was a well respected Elder of the Yaegl and Bundjalung tribes.
The story Why the Koala Cries comes from the Yaegl people of the lower Clarence River on the northern coast of New South Wales. The story was originally told by Della’s grandmother, Jessie Laurie Larego of the Yaegl people.
