On 16th June, 2021, Mudyala Aboriginal Corporation was honoured to host the first gathering in our brand new Elders Gathering Program.
Designed to reduce social isolation and support community connectedness, Mudyala’s new Elders Gathering Program also aims to facilitate the re-establishment of the Yaegl Elders Aboriginal Corporation.
9 Yaegl Elders and 6 support crew attended the first meeting, which was held at Nan Lillian Williams’ house at Pippi Beach. During our morning together, the Elders enjoyed a yarn up session, storytelling, dancing and a bit of exercise.
Formally, Mudyala will facilitate monthly Elders Gatherings across the Clarence Valley region. But the Elders had such a deadly time at our first gathering that they’re planning more frequent weekly small gatherings themselves, at different members’ homes. The Elders are planning a range of different activities to enjoy together over the next few months.
