Keeping Our Stories

“Keeping Our Stories – Stories from Yaegl Country” Official book launch was held at the Port of Yamba Historical Society on Friday the 22nd July 2022.

This special project began in 2019, where Uncle Lester Mercy had a fantastic idea to record the stories of our Elders. Uncle Lester and Aneika Kapeen applied for funding with Heritage NSW and were successful. In 2021, the project began with Frances Belle Parker taking project lead and Deborah Breckenridge being lead for Elders interviews.

On the 22nd July 2022, the presentation held in Yamba welcomed the Lower Clarence community in celebration of the Keeping Our Stories book launch. Board Member of Mudyala Aboriginal Corporation, Trevor Kapeen, was the MC of the event while Frances Belle Parker and Deborah Breckenridge precented the books to the Elders and family representatives.

The book is now available for purchase on the Mudyala Aboriginal Corporation website. The book includes the stories of 25 Aboriginal Elders, some who are now no longer with us. This project is proudly funded by NSW Government, Heritage NSW.
