Bakarindi Bushfoods Joins the Mudyala Family

In September 2021, while most of Australia was hiding away in yet another COVID lockdown, Mudyala Aboriginal Corporation became the proud owners of  Bakarindi.

Bakarindi are well known in the region and across Australia as a manufacturer of high quality bush food products sourced from local farmers and suppliers. Due to a change in personal circumstances, however, original owners Amanda and Ian made the decision to advertise the business for sale in 2021.

When we, at Mudyala Aboriginal Corporation became aware of their plans to sell, we saw a fantastic development opportunity in the acquisition of the business.

We did not, however, purchase Bakarindi for the delicious products or even to have a bush food business. Aligning with our vision for continuing education and connection to culture, the Mudyala Aboriginal Corporation team purchased Bakarindi to educate.

Through Bakarindi, we saw a clear opportunity to further educate and expand knowledge within communities about native bush foods and medicines and demonstrate how these can be easily incorporated into everyday lives. Our aim now is to both preserve traditional food knowledge as well as grow new ideas around more contemporary ways of eating with healthy native ingredients.

Along with using Bakarindi  as a tool through which to educate local Aboriginal children and youth about native plans, it will also provide an avenue for conservation and preservation of Aboriginal bush food and environmental knowledge and reconnection of local people back to Country.

The ingredients used in the production of Bakarindi’s bush food range are sourced from local farmers and suppliers. Locally-sourced products include Finger Limes, Riberries, Lemon and Aniseed Myrtle, Rosella Flowers, Davidson Plums (both NSW and Queensland varieties), Mangoes, Tomatoes, Onions, Garlic and Chillies.

Bakarindi offers homemade relishes, chutneys, sauces and jams.
